Five Olympic athletes visited the Vermont state house on Wednesday, April 23rd to be addressed by Governor Shumlin, lawmakers, and representatives from the ski and snowboard community. Along with 14 other Olympians, they were honored for their strong performances in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
Bronze medalist in women’s moguls, Hannah Kearney, cross country ski competitors Ida Sargent, Sophie Caldwell and Liz Stephen and biathlon athlete Susan Dunklee were all in attendance as Governor Shumlin and Ski Vermont’s Parker Riehle addressed the crowd and honored the Olympians.
“You made your state proud,” the Governor told the five. “We cheered for you, celebrated your performances, and were thrilled that such outstanding athletes represented Vermont in the Winter Olympics.”
“As Vermonters and Olympic athletes, you all help shine a global light on our little state’s world class ski areas,” said Ski Vermont President Parker Riehle. “Ski Vermont and our alpine and Nordic resorts owe you many thanks and we couldn’t have been more proud watching you all compete during the Sochi Olympics. You have not only enhanced Vermont’s rich ski culture and history, but you act as an inspiration to the youth of our state and beyond.”
The athletes were also recognized on the floor of the House of Representatives by the Legislature, and presented medallions created by Simon Pearce artisan glassblowing company headquartered in Windsor, Vermont. Cabot Cheese funded the creation of these medallions on behalf of their farmers in honor of 25 years of collaborating with Ski Vermont and the Vermont Tourism & Marketing.
“It is an honor to reward and recognize our Olympian champions with Simon Pearce awards handmade in the USA,” said Simon Pearce’s Rett Carpenter. “Congratulations on your achievements! “
“The farm families who own Cabot made this contribution to honor the Vermont ski areas who have been introducing Olympians and so many others to our slopes and our cheddar for generations,” said Roberta MacDonald from Cabot Cheese.
