State-of-the-Art Snowmaking is the Key to Recovery at Mount Snow

Dover, Vt. (December 23, 2013) – Mount Snow Resort opened for the 2013/2014 ski and snowboard season on November 15, its earliest opening since 2007, with top-to-bottom runs on two of its four mountain faces after only 52 hours of snowmaking. That volume of snow production in such a short window of time is made possible by the resort’s fleet of over 250 high-output fan guns, the most of any resort in North America.
An abundance of this technology is what will allow Mount Snow to recover from this past weekend’s mild weather and rain in time to offer a high quality product during the traditionally busy holiday season. With temperatures expected to drop starting Monday through the rest of the week, an aggressive plan is already in place to allow those fan guns to flex their muscles.
“With the kind of snowmaking conditions we’re seeing in the forecast, we’ll be able to make an awful lot of high quality snow in a very short period of time,” says Dave Moulton, director of mountain operations. “One fan gun alone can turn as much as 126 gallons of water per minute into snow, so when you do the math it’s quite impressive what our system is capable of.”
Speaking of math, at max capacity it is calculated that Mount Snow’s snowmaking system can fill an Olympic-size swimming pool with snow in just 47 minutes and fill all of Fenway Park with snow up to the top of the 18 foot centerfield wall in only 20 hours.
This past summer, Mount Snow worked with Efficiency Vermont on a number of projects to help improve the efficiency and ultimately the output of their snowmaking system. These projects included replacing nearly four miles of aging snowmaking pipe, installing a new moisture separator and air-flow meter. These projects will reduce statewide energy consumption and improve our environment by saving an estimated 544,000 kWh of electricity and 634,929 pounds of carbon emissions per year.
So skiers and snowboarders with plans to visit the Vermont resort over the holidays can rest easy knowing it will be a very white Christmas, at least on the trails of Mount Snow. There is a full schedule of events, activities and live music on-tap along with extended holiday operating hours beginning Christmas Day all the way through New Year’s Day.
