New Glade Discovered on Columbus Weekend

-Volunteers are at it again on Magic Mountain -

October 10, 2012, Londonderry, VT—Columbus Day Weekend at Magic Mountain Ski Area found more than 50 volunteers on the hill and in the lodge working on projects to prep the 1960s-era ski area for the new season. The volunteers clearing out glades on the hill came back at the end of a day’s work and declared another brand new glade ready for “prime-time”.

From all reports, the new glade is steep, has some cliffs, but will also hold the snow extremely well. The exact location cannot be divulged at this time, but it is said to be on Magic’s famed “West Side”, the traditionally more challenging side of the ski area. Most glades take many years, if ever, to make it on the “official” Magic trail map.  Regular customers and locals know where they are hidden and usually are more than happy to guide new guests who are searching for the region’s best tree-skiing and off-piste terrain. However, the early “buzz” about this new, naturally open glade has it pegged by some volunteers as ready-to-be-made official on the map by the 2013-14 season.

“This is one of the great things about Magic,” said Jim Sullivan, President of Magic Mountain. “The people who ski and ride here feel they have a real stake in the mountain and are willing to make the effort in shaping its future—literally.  A new glade is a symbol of how Magic evolves over time, but always with a focus squarely on the sport.”

Magic’s final Volunteer Day of the fall is Saturday, October 20th starting at 9am.

A video capturing, the day’s activity titled “Hard Labor” was created by the “Save Magic” crew and can be seen here. The current “official trail map” is accessible here.

About Magic Mountain Ski Area

Magic is southern Vermont’s only independently owned and operated mountain. Different than the corporate resorts, Magic has stayed true to the original Vermont ski culture.  Magic skiers enjoy a mountain emphasizing natural, diverse ski terrain in an atmosphere of shared camaraderie for the sport both on the slopes and in the lodge after a long, rewarding day. Magic has an authentic vibe because, in reality, it still remains first and foremost a ski area, not a “resort”—and a distinctly Vermont one at that. It’s a community spirit that keeps Magic thriving for those committed ski and riding enthusiasts who want to “carve their own trail” and experience real snow and obstacles that mother-nature puts on the hill. And, it’s why Magic skiers love the mountain so much that they personally invested in the ski area via The Magic Partnership in order to enhance and preserve it for future generations to enjoy.
