On Call for Snow: Stratton’s photographer Schriebl publishes a visual history

Stratton Mountain, Vermont

Whenever it snows here at Stratton, the first person on the mountain is likely photographer Hubert Schriebl. He has spent the last 47 years diligently chronicling the mountain and life at the resort. Now in his 70s, he still hikes to the summit whenever there’s a chance of beautiful photographs.

Schriebl, a native of Austria, arrived at Stratton on Christmas Eve of 1964 after being invited by Emo Henrich to teach at the Stratton Ski School. By 1968, Schriebl was the resort’s official photographer and in 1972 began to work with Austrian photographer Ernest Haas, a pioneer in color and movement photography. Since then, Schriebl has seen the world through the eye of his lens; his art took him on assignments from the Arctic Circle to the American Southwest to the Himalayas.

When not capturing the Winter Olympics or majestic mountains, Schriebl brings his talent to Stratton Mountain. With meticulous care, an eye for light and shadow and a love of color, Schriebl’s photographs showcase the beauty of the mountain. Schriebl has condensed the allure of Stratton’s fifty years into his new book, Stratton: The First 50 Years. The visual history celebrates Stratton’s past and the personalities that helped it grow through Schriebl’s photographs and narrative by ski writer Peggy Shinn.

Over the last 50 years, Stratton has grown from twelve trails to over ninety and evolved into a year-round destination. Stratton: The First 50 Years covers it all, from picnics on the summit to snowboarding in the superpipe. Stratton Mountain Resort is proud to present this stunning volume as part of our limited-edition 50th Anniversary collection, on sale now.

Schriebl will be hosting several book signings this winter, offering the opportunity to meet the unique personality whose photographs represent Stratton to the world. The first of these signings coincide with Thanksgiving weekend and will continue through the season, scheduled as follows:

November 25: 2 to 4 pm in the Village 50th Studio; 4 to 6 pm in the Base Lodge
November 26: 2 to 4 pm in the Village 50th Studio
December 3: 12 to 2 pm in the Village 50th Studio
